The future of solar energy is now. No longer is it a pipe dream of environmental activists, scientists or engineers. Switching to solar power is an economic and ecological choice that many residents and businesses are making in order to stave off rising energy costs and reduce their building’s footprint. While many Albertans are investing in solar energy solutions, there are still many households that believe it to be too expensive. Here are some reasons it’s the perfect time to switch to solar in Alberta.
Alberta’s Solar Capacity
Alberta seems to be a mecca for natural resources. Its major exports; oil and gas have made it the richest province in the country. Sunlight is a largely untapped resource though it’s no tropical paradise, Alberta receives a substantial amount of sunlight year round. Its yearly photovoltaic potential
What does this mean for the future of Alberta’s solar energy?
How the Alberta Government is Getting Involved
Residential and Commercial Solar Program
By 2019, this program aims to create 900 more jobs and reduce carbon emissions by up to half a million tonnes.
Alberta Municipal Solar Program
According to its website, the Alberta Municipal Solar Program (AMSP), “provides financial rebates to Alberta municipalities who install solar photovoltaics (PV) on municipal facilities or land and complete public engagement for the project.” Municipalities are encouraged to participate and submit their applications to the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre (MCCAC).
On-Farm Solar PV Program
Alberta farmers have access to acres of land The province funds the installation of solar PV systems on farms of a certain size in order for farmers to produce their own electricity, save money, and reduce their emissions while staying on the grid.
Invest in The Future of Solar Energy
Alberta’s potential to be the global leader in solar energy production is incredible. We have the capability to adopt a greener form of energy output at a lower cost to our wallets. We no longer have to sacrifice one for the other. Our current energy sources are a major contributor to carbon emissions, which have negatively impacted the environment. Solar energy produces 98% less carbon emissions, while the cost of solar modules has decreased by 80% in the last decade. There’s no better time than now to switch to the power of the sun.
